Weight Loss FAQ

Why weight loss diet plans fail?

You see a gorgeous dress or suit at the store and it lures you to buy it for yourself – but you’re not really at your ideal or desired weight to squeeze in to it. So you start dieting to hopefully lose a few pounds and get rid of some extra flab to have a slimmer figure. At the beginning you lose weight, but after abandoning the diet’s regime you again start gaining it back. This is the most common and frustrating result of dieting. There’s a significant cause for the failure of diet plans: during a quick or “fad” diet a person eats less, but almost immediately his or her body receives a signal from the brain that the body is in starvation mode. The brain, via this remarkable signal, is actually trying to protect the body from losing weight to guard it against starvation and death.

How is the brain’s starvation mode triggered?

The stored energy from fats, carbohydrates and proteins are utilized by different organs of our body. Glucose is used by the brain for its proper functioning, which it gets from the blood. Blood absorbs glucose from the food we eat. During dieting, blood receives less amounts of glucose. To overcome the shortage of the glucose supply, the brain ‘tells’ the body to start receiving glucose from the liver. This is the backup glucose stored in the liver as Glycogen and the brain finishes this within 3-4 days. After the brain uses the stored Glycogen, the body gets the signal to switch on to starvation mode and subsequently prevents the loss of weight.

How are dieting and the brain’s starvation mode mechanism interrelated?

The moment the body goes into starvation mode it receives signal from the brain to reduce the rate of your metabolism. As the metabolism function goes down, the body starts burning calories that are equivalent to our intake. Weight loss is minimal in this phase, since both calorie intake and calories burned are in same proportion (they’re “equal”).
To fulfill the body’s required protein needs, the brain signals the body to eat up its own body muscle, which can result in decreased energy and weakness. At this juncture people generally feel they have failed, and give up dieting. During this period the body’s low metabolic rate reduces to burn fewer calories than before. Hence, the diet plan fails. Instead of losing weight, people tend to gain weight as their lowered metabolism starts burning fewer calories.
