Photodynamic Acne Therapies

Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) is the most recent advance in acne therapy, and delivers results. The treatment process uses Levulan® – a topical medication/sensitizer that is applied to the skin and then activated by exposure to a specific wavelength of light (IPL or Blue Light). Levulan® is a 20% solution of Aminolevulinic Acid (ALA) – a “natural” product found in throughout the human body.

The light-activated Levulan® selectively destroys acne bacteria in the pores and shrinks overactive oil glands, which are the root cause in the formation of acne conditions. With long-lasting effects (up to 12 months or longer), a series of two to three treatment sessions will be scheduled two to three weeks apart.  Using ALA is a safer alternative to Accutane, and achieves the same results without the risky side effects or expense.

Before ALA treatment, the patient will have a microdermabrasion treatment and an acetone facial wash that allows more effective penetration of the Levulan®. After application, the patient will remain in a dark room for 30 minutes to two hours while the medication is absorbed. After this induction time the medication is activated with exposure to blue light. Depending on the condition being treated, other lights such as intense pulsed light (IPL) or red light can be used to activate the ALA.

PhotoDynamic Therapy is a safe acne treatment that delivers the results promised. Used for resistant acne, PDT offers life-altering improvements and has been shown to be one of the most effective acne treatments currently available – with acne clearance rates exceeding 85%. For clear skin maintenance other, additional types of treatments can be safely performed following initial ALA/PDT treatments.

Our knowledgeable and experienced doctor and staff will advise you to follow certain protocols associated with PDT. There may be some discomfort, redness and swelling (or rarely, blistering) following the procedure. It is very important that patients restrict their exposure to sunlight or other bright lights for 48 hours after treatment, and students receiving PDT typically will miss a few days of school.
